Gynecologic Oncology

The female reproductive system can be affected by various cancers, and our gynecologic oncologist at Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center, in collaboration with Marshall Health and Cabell Huntington Hospital, is specially trained to address these cancers through a range of treatment options. These options include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy.

The types of cancers our team is equipped to handle include:

  • Cervical
  • Endometrial
  • Ovarian
  • Vaginal
  • Vulvar

Our commitment to caring for women with cancer involves a comprehensive approach. In most cases, a combination of treatment modalities is employed, with surgery often complemented by post-operative radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Our gynecologic oncologist, with specialized skills and training, evaluates the cancer's status and delivers the appropriate treatments in the optimal sequence. In some instances, surgery may be deferred until after radiation or chemotherapy completion.

Collaborating closely with radiation therapy physicians, our care team ensures seamless coordination for women requiring radiation therapy. For patients with ovarian cancers or advanced cancers at other sites necessitating chemotherapy, our team collaborates with the nursing staff at Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Beyond disease treatment, our care team is proficient in pain management, symptom control, palliative care, and end-of-life issues. Working in close partnership with Hospice agencies in the region, we aim to help patients maintain their quality of life.

Our gynecologic oncologist's expertise is not limited to cancer cases. Other OB/GYN specialists commonly refer patients without cancer to our specialist for surgical interventions. These cases may involve concurrent medical problems, extensive adhesions, bowel involvement, bladder difficulties, severe prolapse of female organs, or other factors complicating surgery. Trust us for expert care tailored to each woman's unique health needs.
